Plastic Sea, Perfect Storm

A rare joint appearance: photographer Rob Hornstra and his writing partner Arnold van Bruggen tell the story of their unique twenty-year collaboration through their latest book and exhibition, Plastic Sea, Perfect Storm — an extensive, layered study of the European region behind our fruit and vegetables supply. A project about the connections between politically charged topics such as migration, climate change and exploitation — and about the things we, as Europeans, have lost sight of.

Photography Meets Sufism in Pakistan
A talk on photographic studio practices during the festival of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar

To celebrate the launch of Jugaar: A Pakistani Guide to Aspirational Living, this conversation explores the extraordinary photographic culture surrounding the annual Sufi festival of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan Sharif, Pakistan, which attracts up to three million pilgrims and visitors each year.
The book investigates how temporary photo studios and their colorful, imaginative imagery offer festivalgoers opportunities for escapism, self-transformation and aspiration, allowing them to become, at least for a photographic moment, whoever they wish to be.
The conversation brings together National Geographic photographer Mathieu Paley, who has been working for years on documentary projects around sufism; Lukas Birk, the book’s publisher and writer, whose research explores photographic cultures across South and Southeast Asia and Saeed Hussain, editor of the Pakistani edition, who will offer insights into the cultural and social context of these remarkable photographic practices.
Together, they will explore a visually exuberant world where photography, popular imagination and spiritual celebration meets in a vibrant and unapologetic way.

Anders Petersen in Conversation with David Campany

To mark the publication of The Institution Trilogy, Swedish photographer Anders Petersen will be in conversation with David Campany, curator, writer and Creative Director at the International Center of Photography (ICP), to discuss one of the major bodies of work in Petersen’s practice.

Launched with this publication, the new publishing house Werkstatt: Editions brings together three projects Petersen made during the 1980s and 1990s, each set within a different institution: a prison, an elderly care home and a psychiatric hospital. Originally published as separate books — Fängelse (1984), Rågång till Kärleken (1991) and Ingen har sett allt (1995) — these three bodies of work are now brought together in a new edition, featuring a fresh selection and sequencing of images, new texts and a conceptual design that gives the projects a renewed sense of coherence.
The conversation will offer an opportunity to explore Petersen’s approach to these spaces of confinement and everyday life, where human vulnerability, interpersonal relationships and the complexities of being human come into sharp focus. In dialogue with Campany, Petersen will also reflect on how this new edition transforms our understanding of the three projects, and on the ways in which the photobook can open up new perspectives on a body of work over time.

Rencontre animée par Marie Sumalla, Photo editor Le Monde; Avec Mathias Benguigui, éditeur & Kamil Zihnioglu, auteur photographe, Saetta Books ; Céline Pévrier, éditrice & Hélène David, autrice photographe, sun/sun éditions; Rob van Hoesel éditeur & Terry Ratzlaff autrice photographe, The Eriskay Connection

Making books together

Three publishing houses — sun/sun, Saetta Books and The Eriskay Connection — each invite an author or photographer they have worked with to share their experience of creating photobooks. Through three distinct collaborations, publishers and photographers explore what happens between an author’s original intention and the perspective of the person who accompanies its development. What becomes of a project when these two visions meet? How can dialogue transform an initial idea, bring new possibilities to light, or lead to the invention of an unexpected form? From image selection and sequencing to material choices and the final form of the book, the discussion explores what emerges from this collaborative process: a distinctive form of expression, belonging neither entirely to the author nor to the publisher, but taking shape through their exchange.
A discussion moderated by Marie Sumalla, Picture Editor at Le Monde, with Mathias Benguigui, Publisher, & Kamil Zihnioglu, Photographer and Author, Saetta Books; Céline Pévrier, Publisher, & Hélène David, Photographer and Author, sun/sun éditions; Rob van Hoesel Publisher, & Terry Ratzlaff Photographer and Author, The Eriskay Connection

Photography, trauma and male violence: questions of representation and responsibility

A conversation with Sina Niemeyer and Karla Hiraldo Voleau, by invitation of Hermann Lohss

Photography has the power to make visible stories that are often silenced, hidden or difficult to confront. But what happens when these stories involve trauma, male violence and deeply personal experiences? In this conversation, photographers Sina Niemeyer and Karla Hiraldo Voleau will discuss the challenges of addressing trauma and male violence within the photographic industry. They will reflect on how the media, cultural institutions and photography professionals engage with these subjects, and on the ethical responsibilities that come with presenting and sharing such stories.
This conversation will open a space for reflection and exchange on vulnerability, responsibility, representation and the possibilities of photography as a tool for awareness, dialogue and change.
